DVB-S2
What DVB-S2 means
DVB-S2 is a second-generation Digital Video Broadcasting standard for satellite transmission. When a TV, set-top box, or receiver lists DVB-S2 under its digital signal format systems, it indicates that the product has a tuner designed to receive compatible digital satellite broadcasts.
TVFit listings show DVB-S2 alongside formats such as DVB-C for cable and DVB-T2 for terrestrial broadcasts. These are different delivery systems, so DVB-S2 is the relevant label when your television signal comes from a satellite dish and compatible satellite equipment.
Why it matters on TVFit
DVB-S2 can help you filter products with built-in satellite reception rather than relying only on cable or terrestrial tuners. It is most relevant if you want to connect a satellite feed directly to a compatible TV or receiver.
It matters less if your viewing comes through an external satellite box, a streaming device, cable service, or a terrestrial antenna. In those cases, the external equipment or another tuner may handle signal reception.
What the label does not tell you
DVB-S2 is a capability indicator, not a quality rating. It does not by itself confirm:
- That a dish, LNB, cable, or satellite installation is included
- Which satellite positions, services, or transmission parameters are supported
- Whether channels are free-to-air, encrypted, or usable without a subscription
- Support for a particular conditional-access system or CI/CI+ arrangement
- Picture quality, channel availability, resolution, or reception reliability
- Compatibility with every satellite broadcast
A product may also list DVB-S as well as DVB-S2. The presence of DVB-S2 still does not describe the complete satellite setup or guarantee access to a specific service.
What to check on a product page
Check whether DVB-S2 appears in the product's digital signal format system list and whether the product has the satellite input and other connections required for your setup. Review the full tuner description rather than treating one format label as a complete compatibility statement.
If a listing gives a channel quantity for DVB-S2, treat that as a separate catalog specification. It does not establish how many channels you will receive in practice, which services are included, or whether they require access rights. TVFit's observed listings include products with a DVB-S2 channel quantity of 6000, but that figure is not universal to every DVB-S2 product.
Nearby terms include DVB-S, DVB-C, and DVB-T2. These names identify other broadcast standards; they should not be used interchangeably with DVB-S2.
