EPG

EPG means Electronic Programme Guide: an on-screen listing that shows broadcast channels and programme information. It helps you see what is on now and what is scheduled next.

What EPG means on a TV

EPG stands for Electronic Programme Guide. On a television, it usually means an on-screen guide showing broadcast channels, programme names and scheduled times. Depending on the service and the broadcast signal, it may cover programmes currently showing and upcoming programmes.

An EPG is associated with live television reception rather than the TV's general smart features. It is commonly considered alongside DVB or other broadcast and tuner information, because the available guide data depends on the broadcast service being received.

Why it matters to TVFit shoppers

EPG can make live-TV viewing easier. Instead of changing channels to see what is on, you can open the guide and browse the schedule. This is most relevant if you regularly watch programmes through the TV's built-in tuner.

On TVFit, an entry such as “Electronic Programme Guide (EPG): Yes” indicates that the published product data records EPG support. An entry marked “No” indicates that the catalogue records the feature as absent. Treat either entry as a capability flag, not as a rating of the guide's design or usefulness.

What the EPG label does not tell you

An EPG listing does not, by itself, confirm:

  • how many days of listings are available;
  • which channels or regions provide guide data;
  • how quickly listings update;
  • whether programme descriptions are detailed;
  • whether the guide supports recording, reminders or catch-up viewing;
  • how easy the guide is to navigate.

A published reference to an “8-day EPG” is more specific about listing duration than a plain EPG entry, but it still does not describe every aspect of the interface or the availability of data for every channel. Similarly, EPG appearing within a Teletext standards field should not automatically be treated as a complete description of the TV's guide features.

What to check on a product page

Check whether the product is marked “Yes” or “No” for Electronic Programme Guide (EPG), and look for any more specific wording about the broadcast system or guide period. Review the product's tuner and broadcast details as well, since these help establish the context in which the guide is intended to work.

If a product page only shows a capability flag, the quality, layout and update behaviour of its EPG remain unknown. The specification also does not establish that guide data will be available for every broadcast source or location.

Nearby terms

DVB describes a family of digital television broadcast standards. Teletext is a separate broadcast information service, although catalogue specifications may mention EPG and Teletext-related terms together. Playback formats describe media files the TV can play and are not the same as programme-guide support.
