Local dimming adjusts sections of a TV’s backlight independently, aiming to keep dark areas darker while bright areas remain illuminated.

What local dimming means

Local dimming is a backlight-control feature used mainly in LCD and LED TVs. Instead of keeping the entire backlight at one level, the TV can adjust separate sections behind the screen. It may reduce illumination in darker parts of an image while keeping brighter parts lit.

This can be relevant to contrast, dark-scene detail and HDR presentation. The exact effect depends on how the TV implements and controls its dimming system.

Why the label matters on TVFit

TVFit product listings may identify Local Dimming as a backlight dimming technology or a dimming type. Some listings also use names such as Full Array Local Dimming or Full Array Local Dimming Pro.

These labels indicate that a feature or technology is listed. They do not, by themselves, rate the quality of the result. A capability flag does not tell you how many independently controlled areas the TV has, how large those areas are, or how the dimming algorithm behaves.

When it matters

Local dimming is most relevant when a TV displays a mixture of very bright and very dark content, such as night scenes, subtitles over dark backgrounds or HDR images. It may matter less when content is consistently bright or when the difference between bright and dark areas is limited.

The feature can also involve trade-offs. If a bright object appears against a dark background, some TVs may show light around that object, commonly described as blooming or haloing. The presence of local dimming does not confirm how visible this effect will be.

What the specification does not tell you

A listing that says Local Dimming: Yes does not establish:

The number of dimming zones or sections
Whether the system is full-array, edge-lit or another implementation
How quickly or precisely the backlight responds
How much blooming, black-level variation or screen uniformity to expect
Whether the feature operates in every picture mode or with every type of content

Names containing terms such as “Pro” are also product or marketing descriptors, not a universal performance rating. Where a product page provides only the feature name, these details remain unknown.

What to check on a product page

Check whether local dimming is listed as a general capability, a backlight technology, or as part of a named TV technology bundle. Look for any separate information about the backlight design, dimming zones, picture modes and HDR support, but do not assume that an unlisted detail is included.

The most reliable interpretation is: local dimming is present or claimed by the listing, while the resulting picture performance requires more specific information or independent testing.
