backlight

A TV backlight is the light source behind an LCD panel that makes the picture visible. Product pages may also list the backlight type and whether the TV supports dimming.

What “backlight” means on a TV

A backlight is the light source behind an LCD display. The liquid-crystal panel controls that light to create the image you see. In product listings, LED backlight usually identifies an LCD TV that uses LEDs as its light source.

The term is mainly relevant to LCD-based televisions. Self-emissive display technologies do not use a conventional backlight in the same way.

Backlight types shown on TVFit

TVFit product data may identify several LED backlighting types:

  • Direct-LED places LEDs behind the display panel.
  • Edge-LED places LEDs around the edges of the panel.
  • Mini LED uses smaller LEDs in the backlight system.
  • Dual LED identifies a dual-LED backlight approach.

These labels describe the backlight arrangement or technology. They do not, by themselves, establish picture quality, brightness, uniformity or viewing performance.

What backlight dimming means

Some TVs can vary the light from all or part of the backlight. This is commonly described as local dimming, which can be relevant when a scene contains both bright and dark areas. TVFit listings may also use labels such as UHD Dimming, Supreme UHD Dimming, Ultimate UHD Dimming, Pixel Dimming or Micro Dimming.

A dimming label is a capability or technology description, not a quality rating. The label alone does not tell you the number of dimming zones, how the system is implemented, or how effective it is in particular scenes. If those details are not shown on the product page, they remain unknown.

When this term matters

Backlight information matters when you are comparing LCD TVs with different panel illumination systems or checking whether a model lists a dimming technology. It may be less important if you are only confirming screen size, resolution or connectivity.

Do not treat Backlight: Yes or LED backlight: Yes as evidence that one TV is better than another. Those entries only indicate that the catalog records the capability. The exact backlight type and dimming information should be checked separately.

What to check on a product page

Look for:

  • Whether Backlight or LED backlight is listed.
  • The stated LED backlighting type, if provided.
  • Any listed Backlight dimming technology.
  • The display technology, since not every display uses a conventional backlight.
  • Exact model details if you need information not included in the catalog fields.

Nearby terms include LED backlighting type, Local Dimming, Direct-LED, Edge-LED, Mini LED, Dual LED, Pixel Dimming and Micro Dimming.
